Nostr is a decentralized network protocol for distributed and free social networking system. Posts are particularly resistant to censorship and are cryptographically validated. As of April 2023, Nostr has 1.1 million users.One of Nostr’s main innovations is its concept of relays, software that sends, receives, and stores text messages. Anyone with a device, such as, but not limited to, a laptop and an internet connection, can run a relay. Those users running decentralized relays are fully independent of centralized software owned by a for-profit corporation such as Amazon or Google.Edward Snowden, whistleblower and former NSA contractor, stated that “unlike the old social media ‘platforms’ where the platform-owner (FB, Tiktok, Twitter) gets to decide who can speak—and what can be heard—#nostr is an open protocol.” In comparison, social media ban or censorship is not possible with apps built on Nostr.Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, endorses and financially supported the development of Nostr.US Senator Cynthia Lummis and Ethereum's creator Vitalik Buterin are among its early adopters.
