If one makes it about nurture, and claims lesbianism is anything other than pure genetics, than my original position holds, and the question is merely one of environmental conditions.
If it is environment, then environment could similarly influence the traits desired in a male, which could include finding openess attractive or otherwise not being turned off by it.
I honestly think women are more like clay than stone. They can be molded. And to think that a man cannot be open is to assume they're fixed and rigid.
Going back to the original post, the mistake was not the openness, but the timing, the context, or even the follow up. He needs to set up the environment, before, during, and after.
