@MarciaW There are cases where biofuels are the only viable alternative, especially in a period of transition away from fossil fuels.

Could it all be supplied just with byproducts from food production and other processes?

There are definitely cases where biofuel production doesn't make sense (corn ethanol in the US comes to mind), but I wouldn't do a blanket statement for all of it.
