The Gila National Forest is a 3.3 million-acre national forest in southwestern New Mexico. The national forest encompasses the world's first designated wilderness, the Gila Wilderness.
The Gila Cliff Dwellings were built by the Mimbres branch of the Mogollon people between the late 1270s and 1300. These dwellings served as habitation, storage, and ceremonial spaces for about thirty years before the Mimbres migrated elsewhere.
