     @thomasfuchs looking at various photos I think you're right -- the RadioShack ones had colorful interiors and neon in later models, but only clear plastic housings. I did find this pink Bell phone, but can't find a year on it.

     @thomasfuchs I thought the translucent plastic bit originated with landline phones (at least I distinctly remember one from the show Clarissa Explains it All)
