@maija tariffs are idk i don't like taxes in general but it's sort of mandatory to have tariffs if you want to have progressive things too

@maija if you say everyone in the country has to get paid 20$ an hour but theres no tariffs then banks just wage dump the labor to another country without that rule, and fuck over everyone in the country who does have to follow it. same with things like 'healthcare' and 'you have to put guard rails on the catwalk.'
you have to basically set it such that whatever costs that country is skimming by hating their population is offset by the tariff. but no more than that, because you still want people to compete for good imports just not on who can grind the citizens in to paste the hardest. :blobcatdunno:

@maija protectionist policies usually refers to propping up your local businesses though. like making it so nobody can compete with costco because you just ban everyone from being able to
they aren't usually used to protect the people themselves

@icedquinn protectionist for the nationals. you want as much being local as possible. dont compete fairly with other countries. make tarrifs as high as possible before it seriously hurts locally. export as much as possible be as diversified as possible, ban cheaper third world equivalents to your products from entering the market.
this kind of protectionism not just propping up coatco. sure prop up businesses when your rival isnt in your country
globalism was a mistake
