proprietary software is worse than open source, but not for the stupid freetard reasons
both are programmed badly and barely fucking work, but proprietary software adds a bunch of licensing bullshit on top that breaks it even more and requires you to handhold your purchasing department on getting the correct loicense and count user/machine seats and manage renewals and a whole bunch of other pointless busywork
and then there's the support problem. there will be an out of touch boomer in a leadership role in your company who thinks having a support contract means you'll be able to call the engineer who wrote the program and work out any problems in 10 minutes like it's 1991 rather than being sent into an endless loop of "your call is important to us, please remain on the line for the next available representative" and then blown off into an endless cycle of "hello sir kindly do the needful and upload the latest logs" and "we are analyzing the logs".

@skylar Free means freedom.
Proprietary malware is always nonfree, even if you download an gratis unauthorized copy.

@Suiseiseki nearly all software is free
either they put it on their web zone for free or you can take it for free from your favorite torrent tracker

@Suiseiseki @skylar find me free software that handles construction drawing markups and won't break compatibility with partner companies using proprietary software

@professionalbigot69 That doesn't have enough details to be able to make a proper suggestion.
Depending on the used file formats, Inkscape may work fine, or maybe you'll need FreeCAD.
The main issue with such things appears to be intentional proprietary sabotage via proprietary formats, which need to be reverse-engineered before anything can be displayed.

@skylar Piracy is theft and murder will the help of a boat, so it is stealing.
Making an unauthorized copy, or even a prohibited copy of software is not a form of piracy, as you don't use a boat to carry out such copying.
Imagine not realizing that proprietary malware is still malware even if you didn't pay for a copy.
