Alexandre Oliva (lxo@gnusocial.net)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 13:30:47 JST Alexandre Oliva thinking aloud here: using it for software that isn't meant to perform remote users' computing would sacrifice the local and actual (local) user's freedom to *not* distribute the software in cases where not distributing it wouldn't hurt anybody's freedom -

I also started considering AGPL3 better for everything, not just "server" software. I see no downsides to licensing desktop stuff under it, for example (but I might be missing something).

Please do write!

Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦 (rysiek@mstdn.social)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 13:30:50 JST Michał "rysiek" Woźniak · 🇺🇦 @smallcircles I have opinions on this, but no time to write them out fully.
But they boil down to two C's: "copyleft", and "corpus".
We *can* build a *corpus* of legally interoperable software (and culture) that would let us gradually make proprietary stuff obsolete. Because it would shut-out the closed-source world from all the code and culture we create.
I need to form this and blog about it.

smallcircles (Humanity Now 🕊) (smallcircles@social.coop)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 13:30:55 JST smallcircles (Humanity Now 🕊) We do the research, innovation, execution and implementation in public as well. The whole thing.
Note: I am just musing. I have no clue what is a best approach.

alcinnz (alcinnz@floss.social)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 13:30:57 JST alcinnz @rysiek @smallcircles I have to concur: Ideas are cheap, execution is what matters.
Basically any dev (including myself) I talk to has more than enough ideas, and need to choose specific ones to spend time on. I'm sure corporations are likewise, its cheap to hire someone to come up with ideas!
Also: I specifically prioritise the ideas I doubt Big Tech would like...

This goes beyond that, I feel.
We give away our creative ideas and Innovation *before* it is licensed and long before we turn it into something concrete.

smallcircles (Humanity Now 🕊) (smallcircles@social.coop)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 13:31:01 JST smallcircles (Humanity Now 🕊) Hot take for some deliberation..
If #FreeSoftware folks were like miners. Dilligently "working in public" digging up the raw and valuable materials from the rich soils of Progress mountain. Not for their monetary value, mind you. But to provide Tools & Sustenance for Mankind.
Then why are they leaving the fruits of their labour out in the fields at night? For the Robber Barons to steal their pick of Gemstones. To be turned into jewelry ? which they call Wealth.
Leaving #FOSS hungry and weak.
