Exactly, the first 3 or 4 smartphones I had lasted forever because I could replace the battery myself.

nothing to do with the contemporary gov leaks that showed smartphones could still collect and send activity data when powered 'off' -

Yeah there were touchscreen phones before the iPhone, but they weren't as nice or nearly as user-friendly/idiot-proof.

I agree. I'm from the before times. At least a decade before the first 'smart' phones as we know them today. I miss being the 'computer nerd' and if I had a time machine I'd go back and terminate Shuji Nakamura before he could invent the Blue LED. -

The internet was also better then because it was much more a hobbyist thing, far fewer people were on it, and the smartphone with internet access was not widespread yet. It could have been going at 1 trillion yottabits a second and that would be "God's internet speed", lol.
People in industries complain that "kids don't know what folders on computers are" but that was true in the 1990's as well.
The difference is everyone has a smartphone these days (which even literal chimpanzees can use), and there are a lot more browns (particularly sub-continentals), and stupid people, on the internet.

But the internet used to be a lot less bloated...
5 trillion checks to make sure I can access X content after Y ad agency's been tipped off I have been here/saw an ad (I never do because I block them), Z analytics company (often also the ad company), and finally the actual webpage with the minimal content or service I need at best.
