   there's something that does irk me a little bit about the fact that moving followers from one instance to another, in the circumstances where it's even possible at all, is a process which involves the consent and involvement of the instances on both ends, and also needs everyone following you to also have instance software specifically compatible with the move.
   
   there's a lot of moving parts and it feels like there honestly shouldn't be. what if someone's point of reference for the location of your current account wasn't expressed in fedi protocols at all? what if your instance software let you "follow" a pointer to an account that the person moving their account controlled?

     @evelyn@misskey.bubbletea.dev you do have to configure it on both ends, but people that follow the old account who are also on up-to-date mastodon instances will automagically follow the new one

     @thatonecalculator@stop.voring.me i might be misunderstanding it, but from what i remember you have to configure it on both the sending and receiving account, and then the instances of people following you have to act on it, is that wrong at all?

     @thatonecalculator@stop.voring.me ok cool, well, the thing that sucks a bit about this is that if instance a goes down, or there's some dispute and you're not allowed to pack your bags, you can't take your followers to instance b. so, the crudely conceived idea is that instead of having to configure account a and account b and then having your followers move, instead you'd associate a pointer with account a, prob a file on a webserver or something like that, which would point to wherever your current account is. that way, instance a doesn't need to be alive at the moment you move
