The USPS is just an extension of the federal government's right to regulate and control post roads. The founders recognized that if communications fell into the hands on private parties or particular states, that the federation would work.
I actually think the power can be extended to actually network communications, which are basically virtual post roads. This is what no one wants to talk about.
