Jon Stewart's centrist ass is overrated.

@SallyStrange I remember that rally well. IIRC it was because Colbert was still doing his "conservative" character back then.

I couldn't agree more about the hollow nature of the politics. I can never perceive any real principles behind that kind of centrism, it's all just an empty wish for a return to a status quo that never existed.

Feels like the centrist version of fascism's appeal to a mythical past tbh

Simply put, the "Rally to Restore Sanity*" was an unforgiveable orgy of ableism and fash-coddling and I cannot forget it. Even if I could, I would refuse to because UGH

*Edit: I misremembered the name, it was called "The Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear" because Stewart and his ilk are so centrist they couldn't decide on what exactly their rally was supposed to satirize. Or whether it was satirical at all.

@MisuseCase @SallyStrange right, and they just pretend that things were more civil because of "sanity" or w/e instead of the real reason, like you said. We need to get mythbusters on this ASAP!!!

@SallyStrange @tillshadeisgone The past they want to return to is when both parties weren’t that different on race on women’s rights or gay rights, i.e., they were both pretty racist, sexist, and homophobic.

Now one party is at least nominally in favor of civil rights and all that stuff and the other party isn’t and it’s “divisive.”

@tillshadeisgone that last bit, thank you for putting your finger on it. Because it's part of what rendered the event so viscerally repugnant to me.
