   I thought incandescent lights were banned altogether but to my surprise and delight you can still get string lights that are incandescent. Picked up a single string from a large home improvement store and my window at least looks nice now.

     @slash@cdrom.tokyo Yeah they are not banned at all, you can still get them. It's just that most people don't buy them because they are less efficient, so most stores also don't stock them.

     @slash@cdrom.tokyo Not entirely true actually. They were banned from production during the initial phase out phase so the market kinda got forced, at least in the EU. But nowadays there's so little volume of people buying them that the ban is no longer enforced because it really doesn't matter.

     @slash@cdrom.tokyo Also people say incandescent light bulbs waste energy because they produce a lot of heat.
     
     But is it really wasted energy if it the heat they generate is inside your room?

     @SuperDicq I think standard bulbs are now federally mandated to be some LED or CFL drop in replacement for incandescent here, and had just assumed that applied to all categories of bulbs so I’m glad to be proven wrong. I really don’t like LED string lights as much in holiday decoration, the cooler colors just don’t have the same color balance and it leaves trees and windows looking a lot more blue. I find that to just be a lot less cozy feeling to enjoy in the cold weather.
