On a side note, he later attempted to assist many of German officers convicted in the other war crime trials with theirs appeals. Apparently, they were all denied on the ground that they had no right to appeal because only officers of a recognized government had that right and the Reich was not a recognized government.

It was a show trial put on for political purposes.
Torture aside, they dispensed with due process, the rules of evidence, and the right to present a defense, all of which had been central to occidental jurisprudence for millenia.
They also created ex post facto law and used it to depart with the theory of legal positivism, which had been the preeminent legal theory for at least the century prior, i.e. that the only law that applied to the officers was that governing their jurisdiction at the time of the acts.
The only purpose of the trial was to mislead the ignorant masses with the illusion that justice was being done, so that they could create the mythos we've been living under for nearly a century now.
It was an absolute travesty, and calling it justice is a joke.
