Is ActivityPub an abandoned spec? Test suite is dead, main site has expired cert. No wonder there are so many fedi incompatibilities.
From my current understanding, there are lots of optimizations to be had: batched delivery, alternative content sources, external identity, alternative transports, etc.
Lots of this can be accomplished by servers mutually violating the spec, but that brings us back to the incompatibilities.
I just want a spec with blackjack and hookers and active working groups

@alex do you happen to know if there are any proposed spec revisions or anything that addresses these issues?
It seems like only half of the spec is really being used today, and even that half is lacking.

@alex From what I can tell, basically nothing implements the C2S part of the spec.
JSON-LD is a little funky, but it does solve some problems I guess, assuming servers know how to handle different contexts/schemas. I would imagine hacking in implementations of what should be new types into existing types (for compatibility) is a common phenomena where it does exist.

@alex I didn't mean for my comment to be interpreted as if there has to be a working group, I'm totally OK with new pseudo-standards emerging in light of the dead upstream.
Is the code you linked a transformer of Mastodon's implementation to Pleroma's non-standard implementation? Pardon my ignorance, I don't really know what I'm looking at here.

@alex Okay. Just to make sure I've understood correctly, this is just for parsing schemas with non-standard vocab, right? This doesn't solve for the lack of aggregate delivery, doesn't provide a means for specifying alternate transport (say, jsonld serialized over UDP/grpc/websocket rather than tcp/HTTP), correct?
I presume any solutions to those issues wouldn't interop with Mastodon as the "lowest common denominator".

@alex ah, this looks interesting. Allow me some time to read more about this.
nostr aside, it seems to me that while some features could just be layered on top of ActivityPub, it would just require that multiple projects mutually violate the spec and that there be translation layers for those that don't/won't.
Targeting the lowest common denominator (mastodon) is frustrating, especially when we're talking about things beyond just schema interpretation (e.g. transport layer changes).

@alex I don't think you even need to "steamroll" mastodon, just solve some of the longstanding problems discussed in this thread, and mastodon can either adapt or die just like every other fedi project.
Personally, i'm not committed to mastodon compatibility. If dropping support for mastodon as the lowest common denominator is what it takes to solve some of these problems, so be it. Most big mastodon instances have blocked this server anyway.
