It was so much better than travelling by airline. The things you fear about travelling by rail are exactly the things I fear about traveling by air in the United States. I'd travel by rail if it was available here in Kentucky even though Amtrak sucks.

tinydoctor (tinydoctor@mstdn.social)'s status on Friday, 07-Jul-2023 11:54:18 JST tinydoctor @simsa03 My uncle used to take me on train trips back in the sixties when railroad companies still had passenger service, just for the ride. So I no doubt have a nostalgic fondness for travelling by choo-choo.

Even the high-speed ICE you took had its problem as recently one had to be evacuated as it lost its electricity power supply and ACs broke down. On-boa5rd travelling soldiers and police officers shared their water with passengers...
But due to tight budget I need to take 5 regional trains to reach my destinations. And although I have stopovers of 30 minutes on average, that'll work only if all trains are on time. Plus it's a Friday,m plus it's the beginning of the summer school holidays in several regianl sates, so trains will be crowded. I don't even expect the restrooms onboard to work properly, and if they do, they'll be filthy.
I guess I would rather try Amtrak than using German railway. -

simsa03 (simsa03@gnusocial.jp)'s status on Friday, 07-Jul-2023 12:16:52 JST simsa03 @tinydoctor I remember the times when the coaches had 6 person compartments, with a side corridor. Not the modern imitations of aircraft cabins on rail. I hate this way of travelling. -

simsa03 (simsa03@gnusocial.jp)'s status on Tuesday, 11-Jul-2023 09:14:43 JST simsa03 Returned from the rail trip. The journey back turned out as torturing as I had expected. Four stop-overs, the first three in time, with enough of of time to change trains. Then the last connection started 30 minutes late in Frabkfurt and just stopped 10 kilometres before arriving at my destination. Had to find a tramway which then turned out to not service for unexplained reasons. I then switched to a different bus line which took me on a detour of half an hour. Tram journeys went better 30 years ago. Feels like the country in which I live develops into some kind of a developing country. Which may have its positive aspect. But the time till then becomes a phase of things being unbearable. But we should get used to this process of re-wilding in order to reach #postdoom .
