Rectangular opening in the cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde National Park, Durango, Colorado. A rectangular opening is set in a weathered stone wall, revealing a darker interior space beyond. The wall is composed of unevenly arranged, light-colored stones in varying shades of pink and beige. Mesa Verde, located 35 miles west of Durango, offers an up close view into the cliff dwelling where the Pueblo people made their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to 1300. Mesa Verde is one of the most notable and best preserved sites in the U.S. Discovered in the 1800's, the area was established as a National Park by then president, Theodore Roosevelt, on June 29, 1906.
