Hey @gianni<\/a> I was just chatting with @yawnbox<\/a> about a wild range of tech things, and, since I am starting to host an Immich instance in my home, I am considering to convert all my emails to JPEG XL, and I was wondering if there is a way to do so without risking to lose any metadata.<\/p>

I am happy to read any links you might have but I need them to be as simple as possible because encoding\/decoding stuff confuses me a lot. Not my thing\u2026 This is why I found your article explaining how AV1 works<\/a> in simple words absolutely illuminating! Anyway, I just want to save storage space.<\/p>

Also, I am a big big fan of Aviator, and I have been following your work for a while. Thanks so much for all of it!<\/p>

I think something like https:\/\/github.com\/fabianwimberger\/immich-convert-originals<\/a> might be close to what you're looking for? I haven't vetted it (I don\u2019t batch process images for my personal use case), but you can check whether everything is preserved with `exiftool`.<\/p>

Broadly, there are 3 common image metadata formats you\u2019ll run into: ICC (color information), EXIF (descriptive information about the photo, like your camera specs), and XMP (custom XML). If you procure a test file, run it through whatever tool\/script\/etc you\u2019re thinking about using (libjxl, libavif, or something else), and check the before & after with `$ exiftool <image>` to ensure the metadata is the same, you should be good to go with any photos similar to the test case (e.g. you know they have the same metadata fields & file format).<\/p>
