Before long, it was influencing legislation through ACT.<\/p><p>That\u2019s a fairly quick path from lobby group to law-making.<\/p><p>Once it had a seat at the table, officials were told to consult it.<br \/>Legislation was drafted.<br \/>Universities were put on notice that they\u2019d be monitored and surveyed, with consequences if they didn\u2019t comply.<br \/>All of this was framed as protecting speech.<\/p><p>After that, a few things became clear.<\/p><p>Academic freedom didn\u2019t noticeably improve.<br \/>Universities lost some autonomy over how they govern themselves.<br \/>Treaty-related teaching came under pressure.<br \/>Communities already dealing with abuse and harassment had fewer protections.<br \/>Funding was pulled from the Disinformation Project.<br \/>Donors behind the campaign stayed largely out of sight.<br \/>Ideas imported from overseas culture wars started showing up in New Zealand law.<\/p><p>At that point it\u2019s reasonable to ask who actually gained from it.<\/p><p>It wasn\u2019t students.<br \/>It wasn\u2019t universities trying to do their job.<br \/>It wasn\u2019t M\u0101ori, Muslims, or others who tend to carry the cost when speech protections are stretched without care.<\/p><p>The ones who did well were a small, well-organised set of lobby groups that have spent years bringing American political tactics into New Zealand. They didn\u2019t need broad public backing to do it.
