A river is a line of water. Another river crossing and feeding into the first river downstream forms something that is no longer that first river. This is why Christ tells the Pharisees they are not his sheep. They perhaps were descendants of Abraham, but they were definitely of the Edomites (who in turn were of Adam, but only in part).
